Panasonic Coin Cell Battery Size Guide: CR1220, CR1616, CR1620, CR2032 & CR2477
Coin cell batteries may look similar, but small differences in diameter and thickness can determine whether a battery fits and works correctly in a device.
At ArcEin, we regularly handle different sizes of lithium coin cells. The Panasonic batteries shown in this guide are examples from our actual inventory, including CR1220, CR1616, CR1620, CR2032 and CR2477.
This guide explains how these model numbers differ, what their dimensions mean, and what you should check before choosing a replacement battery.

Dimensions are nominal. Refer to the battery manufacturer’s datasheet and your equipment documentation when exact specifications are important.
What Does a Coin Cell Number Mean?
The model number printed on a lithium coin cell provides useful information about its physical size.
Take CR2032 as an example.
The 20 indicates a nominal diameter of approximately 20 mm, while 32 represents a nominal thickness of approximately 3.2 mm.
The same principle helps explain the other batteries in this guide:
CR1616: approximately 16 mm × 1.6 mm
CR1620: approximately 16 mm × 2.0 mm
CR2032: approximately 20 mm × 3.2 mm
CR2477: approximately 24.5 mm × 7.7 mm
CR1220 belongs to the smaller-diameter group, with a nominal diameter of approximately 12.5 mm and thickness of approximately 2.0 mm.
This numbering system is useful when comparing batteries, but the exact model specified for the device should remain your primary reference.
Panasonic CR1220 – Compact 3V Coin Cell
The Panasonic CR1220 in our inventory is clearly marked Lithium 3V on its packaging.
At approximately 12.5 mm in diameter and 2.0 mm thick, it is considerably smaller than a CR2032.
Its compact dimensions make this battery type suitable for devices designed around small coin cells.
A CR1220 shouldn’t be replaced simply with a larger coin cell because the voltage happens to be the same. The physical dimensions and battery holder are equally important.

Panasonic CR1616 – Thin 16 mm Coin Cell
The CR1616 is approximately:
16 mm diameter × 1.6 mm thickness
The Panasonic CR1616 photographed by ArcEin is marked Lithium 3V.
One particularly important point is that CR1616 and CR1620 are not identical batteries.
They share approximately the same 16 mm diameter, but their thickness differs.

Panasonic CR1620 – Similar Diameter, Different Thickness
CR1620 measures approximately:
16 mm diameter × 2.0 mm thickness
Compare that with CR1616:
CR1616 — 16 mm × 1.6 mm
CR1620 — 16 mm × 2.0 mm
That’s only a 0.4 mm thickness difference, but battery compartments and contacts can be designed for a particular cell.
A CR1620 should therefore not automatically be treated as an interchangeable CR1616 replacement.
The correct approach is to use the model specified by the device manufacturer.

Panasonic CR2032 – A Common 20 mm Coin Cell
The CR2032 is one of the more familiar lithium coin-cell formats.
Its nominal dimensions are approximately:
20 mm diameter × 3.2 mm thickness
The Panasonic CR2032 stock photographed for this guide is marked Lithium 3V.
Although CR2032 shares the same general coin-cell appearance as the CR1220, CR1616 and CR1620, it is physically larger.
This is why identifying a battery simply as a “3V coin battery” isn’t enough when ordering a replacement.

Panasonic CR2477 – Much Larger Than CR2032
The difference becomes especially obvious when comparing CR2477 with CR2032.
CR2477 has nominal dimensions of approximately:
24.5 mm diameter × 7.7 mm thickness
CR2032 is approximately:
20 mm diameter × 3.2 mm thickness
The CR2477 is therefore both wider and substantially thicker.

Even though both CR2477 and CR2032 have the same nominal voltage, their physical dimensions are very different.

Same Voltage Doesn’t Mean Same Battery
This is one of the most useful things to remember when buying coin cells.
The Panasonic CR1220, CR1616, CR1620, CR2032 and CR2477 examples shown here are all 3V lithium batteries.
But that does not make them interchangeable.
They differ in physical size and other electrical characteristics.
A replacement battery should therefore be selected using the complete battery model number, rather than voltage alone.
CR1616 vs CR1620: What’s the Difference?
This is an especially easy pair to confuse.
Both have approximately the same:
16 mm diameter
But:
CR1616 = approximately 1.6 mm thick
CR1620 = approximately 2.0 mm thick
The difference is only 0.4 mm, but that’s enough to make them different battery models.
If your existing battery says CR1616, choose CR1616 unless the equipment manufacturer specifically states that another battery is compatible.
CR2032 vs CR2477: What’s the Difference?
These two cells demonstrate why visual identification isn’t sufficient.
Both are round 3V lithium coin cells, but CR2477 is considerably larger.

A CR2477 therefore cannot simply be substituted for a CR2032 because they share the same voltage.
How to Identify the Battery You Need
Before buying a replacement coin cell, remove the existing battery if it is safe and appropriate to do so and inspect the markings on its surface.
Look for a model number such as CR1220, CR1616, CR1620, CR2032 or CR2477.
Also check your device manual or manufacturer’s documentation.
For specialised equipment, additional specifications may matter.
Avoid choosing a battery solely because it “looks about the same size.”
Don’t Force the Wrong Battery Into a Holder
If a battery does not fit properly, don’t force it into the compartment.
A battery that is too thick can place unnecessary pressure on the holder or contacts, while a thinner battery may not maintain reliable electrical contact.
Forcing an incorrect cell can also damage the battery compartment.
Matching the original battery model is usually the simplest approach.
Are These Coin Cells Rechargeable?
Standard Panasonic CR-series lithium coin cells such as those discussed in this guide are primary batteries and should not be recharged.
Do not attempt to recharge a battery unless it is specifically manufactured and labelled as rechargeable.
Which Coin Cell Should You Buy?
Start with the model number printed on your existing battery.
If it says:
CR1220 → replace it with CR1220
CR1616 → replace it with CR1616
CR1620 → replace it with CR1620
CR2032 → replace it with CR2032
CR2477 → replace it with CR2477
If you’re uncertain, check the device manufacturer’s documentation before purchasing.
